Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

The nine months of pregnancy are an experience that no woman will ever forget, and each pregnancy is as unique as the bundle of joy that will follow.

During the 40 week journey, your body will begin to change in order to facilitate the babies growth and development.

Physically;

During pregnancy women may put on somewhere between 30-40 lbs. This weight gain is normal and is often centred on the hips, buttocks, thighs, arms and abdomen. This increase in weight can cause problems with;

  • posture (increased pressure over lower back and sacroiliac joint), which can have a knock on effect on

  • nerves (pressure over sciatic nerve)

  • muscles (stretching to facilitate the growth of the baby) and

  • mobility of joints (Hormones causing laxity in the joints).

Hormones during pregnancy cause muscles, ligaments, cartilage and even bones to ‘soften’ and become more pliable - especially the softening of smooth muscle can lead to problems such as haemorrhoids, varicose veins and constipation.

During pregnancy the volume within the body increases by up to 50% which can lead to swollen ankles and wrists. This can contribute to more serious issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Emotionally;

Alongside the adaptations to the physical characteristics, The hormones secreted during pregnancy can also lead to a pregnant woman not feeling in control of their emotions. It is common for pregnant women to feel emotional and sensitive.

The use of Pregnancy Massage during the pregnancy is a wonderful experience. It helps a woman relax, supports her body during a period of physiological change and helps to prepare the whole body for birth.

Massage helps the body to;

  • increase blood circulation to the muscles being massaged. This results in more oxygen and nutrients becoming available to these tissues.

  • eliminate waste products through the lymphatic and circulatory systems which combat fatigue and helps the mother to be feel more energetic.

  • stimulates glandular secretions, which help stabilise hormone levels.

  • can help to relieve aches and pains and other common health problems experienced during pregnancy.

Towards the end of pregnancy you may find that there is plenty to do in the preparation for the baby's arrival but it is an important time for the mother to relax and enjoy the last weeks of carrying their baby. Massage provides a special time for the you to unwind and helps you focus on your body and your baby.

Massage is good for baby too. Research has shown that the unborn baby can be affected by the stress levels experienced by its mother. Massage has an indirect relaxing effect on the baby as the mother releases oxytocin and prolactin as a result of skin stimulation. Generally the more relaxed a mother feels during pregnancy, the more relaxed her pregnancy and birth is likely to be.
